Fraser Park FC welcomes $2 million investment from Federal Government 'special' fund

NSW football club Fraser Park Football Club's plans to upgrade their stadium in the inner suburb of Marrickville have been boosted with the announcement of special Federal Government funding grant of $2 million.

In the first of what are expected to be a number of special funding announcements in the run up to the Federal Election in September, Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Minister for Regional Development and Local Government Anthony Albanese and Federal Sport Minister Kate Lundy visited the Club on Saturday (18th May) to make the announcement.

The funding will go toward the Club's plans to build a new grandstand and upgrade facilities. The Club, which competes in IGA National Premier League NSW Division Division 2 and whose traditional links are with Sydney's Portuguese community, also has plans to install a synthetic turf surface

A statement from the Club explained "an upgraded Fraser Park venue will provide opportunities for the younger generation to develop their sporting skills and provide a family friendly social environment for the community.

"The immediate focus is the replacement of the old grandstand with a new structure capable of accommodating 1,000 spectators.

"The construction is expected to start on the 23rd August 2013 and take 26 weeks to complete.

"The Grandstand should be officially opened around March 2014, in time for the 2014 football season.

"The construction of the grandstand is an integral part of the Sydney Portugal Community Club vision and strategy for the Fraser Park complex. Futsal Courts have been recently opened to provide an opportunity for youth in the area to enjoy world class sporting facilities and the new grandstand is an important next stage."

The Club also highlight expected benefits to Fraser Park FC and the broader Marrickville district include:

• Provide sporting facilities for organised sport;

• Safe and comfortable accommodation for watching sporting events;

• Ability to attract and host major sporting events;

• Suitable venue for visiting football teams from within Australia and overseas. In particular team participating in the 2015 Asia Cup;

• Compliance with Footballl NSW football ground requirements (Grade-A accreditation) to enable participation of Fraser park Football Club teams in a higher standard of football competition;

• Venue for school sporting activities.
