Football matches in Brisbane to continue after governing bodies resolve insurance matters

Confusion over plans by Football Queensland to restructure its competitions in the south east of the state - which led Football Brisbane to announce that all matches were suspended earlier this week - appears to have been resolved.

Games and training for 40,000 players have reportedly resumed with Football Queensland having assured stakeholders that games were back with all clubs and participants remaining insured under a national insurance scheme provided by Football Australia through Football Queensland.

Earlier this week, Football Brisbane - which sits under the state body - announced all matches had been suspended because a change in competition structures had impacted insurance cover.

However, in a letter sent on Thursday, Football Queensland Chief Executive, Robert Cavallucci assured its members that games were back on.

The letter advised “football will continue uninterrupted for the remainder of the regular season, despite the challenges of recent days.

"I can only imagine the confusion and concern you may have experienced regarding the unpredicted disruption to scheduled competition fixtures, planned nightly training and other routing football activities.

"All junior and senior games and competitions in which your club participates will continue as scheduled for the remainder of the year."

Cavallucci said Football Queensland is implementing its plan to transition all clubs in the state’s south-east into a new, single structure of competitions, as opposed to the multiple different competitions that exist currently and are managed by different governing bodies.

Football Brisbane had advised that the transition would interrupt the current season but Cavallucci advised that it would be completed in mid-August with details of which clubs would be in which competition to be released in December.

In a statement, Football Queensland said Football Australia provided advice to directors on 13th July that all clubs and participants remain insured under a national insurance scheme provided through Football Queensland.

Football Brisbane's Rabieh Krayem confirmed games had resumed as normal, with Football Queensland coordinating the competitions for clubs in Brisbane.

Krayem said it was a great result for the more than 40,000 players and volunteers who make up the Brisbane football community.

He said the confusion arose from Football Queensland sending a letter on Wednesday night advising Football Brisbane that it had been disaffiliated from Football Queensland, without explaining why.
