Fiji National Stadium to get facelift

Fiji's National Stadium is set to get a multi-million dollar facelift, in order to provide state-of-the-art facilities for Fijians.

The renovation works, which are scheduled to commence on 1st May 2012, follow the recent approval by the Fijian Government to guarantee the Fiji Sports Council a grant of FJD$3 million (US$1.6 million) annually for the next five years.

Sports Council Chairman Peter Mazey said that in order to effectively carry out this enormous task, all necessary protocols and regulations would need to be strictly followed to allow for the advertisement of contractors and individuals required to complete this project successfully.

Mazey explained "the council is pleased to announce the appointment of Houng Lee Kaba Jacob as project manager and structural engineer, Rawlinsons as quantity surveyor, Clearwater and Vitia architects as joint architects for this project, Irwin Alsop Company Limited as services engineers and Entec Limited appointed as the geotechnical engineers."

Fiji Sports Council Chief Executive Litiana Loabuka added "the new National Stadium complex is expected to be completed by December 2012 and will feature international-standard sporting grounds, facilities, lights, and track.

"We also intend to include a seating capacity of 20,000.

"There are other state-of-the-art features we are hoping to include but that will depend on our budget"

There have been no major upgrades to the stadium since it hosted the South Pacific Games in 1979.
