Federal Government refuses Perth Stadium funding appeal
Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan has had a request for Federal funding for the Perth Stadium development turned down by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Premier McGowan contacted Prime Minister Turnbull in May over the possibility of the Federal Government providing a contribution towards the $1.45 billion venue facility. However, The West Australian reports that that request has now been turned down.
According to the newspaper, Prime Minister Turnbull pointed out in a return letter that his Government had recently provided West Australia with $1.6 billion to spend on road, rail and infrastructure.
Premier McGowan has hit out at Turnbull’s response and highlighted the fact that large-scale venues in other areas of Australia have benefited from Federal Government funding in the past.
The West Australian reported Premier McGowan as stating “it’s especially disappointing when Federal Governments in the past have been happy to make significant contributions to other stadium developments across the country.
“Once again our state has been treated poorly compared to the other states. Once again, we’ve been short-changed.”
The 60,000-seat venue is due to open in early 2018.
