Excitement Builds for Arafura Games 2011
Northern Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson has thanked sponsors, organisers and volunteers at a function to mark 100 days until the 2011 Arafura Games.
Chief Minister Henderson announced "it is my pleasure to today mark the 100th day until the Top End's signature sporting event lights up Darwin - the Arafura Games.
"2011 is a special year for the Northern Territory, being the 100th birthday of NT independence from South Australia, and of Darwin's name; the Arafura Games are shaping up as a fitting celebration of this important milestone."
Speaking at Sky City Casino, Chief Minister Henderson praised sponsors, Sports Co-ordinators and volunteers added âthe games are a unique Territory event and it is fantastic to have local people working together to showcase our city to the estimated 4000 participants from around Australia and the world.
"As well as providing great competition and a great spectacle, the games bring more than $5 million into the Territory economy while strengthening trade links with our regional neighbours."
Chief Minister Henderson said preparations are on track for the best games yet.
"The Arafura Games management centre is fully operational, sponsors are onboard and interest has been extremely strong from participating countries, especially with Arafura Stadium's new upgrade.
"The Territory's home of Athletics is receiving a $4.2 million overhaul with a new track, field and lights bringing it up to IAAF standard."
