Events and research back NSW Government claims to be ‘sporting capital of Australia in 2016’
The NSW Government is claiming that NSW is “Australia’s undisputed home of major sporting events”, highlighting that the State is set to host more than double the number of events than Victoria will stage in 2016.
Figures released by Sportsyear Report 2016 shows NSW has secured 24 major sporting events including College Football, two State of Origin matches and the Bledisloe Cup in the upcoming year.
Based on these figures, NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government is unashamedly committed to bringing the world’s biggest and best sporting content to the State.
Minister Ayres stated “many of these events are staples of the NSW sporting calendar, and many we have worked extremely hard to secure through the tireless work of the State’s tourism and major events agency Destination NSW.
“NSW continues to be Australia’s biggest draw card when it comes to attracting sports looking to showcase their product on a global stage. NSW is quite simply Australia’s home ground.”
Destination NSW Chief Executive Sandra Chipchase is looking forward to NSW delivering yet another packed major events calendar in 2016.
Chipchase added “NSW is a sports lover’s paradise and in the coming year there is something for everyone. We have the Sydney Sevens rugby, FAST4 tennis, American College Football, WRC Rally Australia in Coffs Harbour, the State of Origin, Bledisloe Cup, Bathurst 1000, World Baseball Classic qualifier, Australian Open Golf and so much more.
“These events attract thousands of visitors, providing a boost to local hotels, restaurants and businesses and growing the NSW visitor economy.”
In the past week, NSW has also confirmed to major football events that will be staged at ANZ Stadium..
The first will see the Liverpool Legends v Australian Legends football classic in January next year while English Premier League giants Arsenal will play back-to-back matches against Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers at ANZ Stadium as part of a new strategic partnership with the NSW Government in July 2017.
