East Pilbara’s Nullagine Aquatic Centre set for October opening
The Shire of East Pilbara has advised that the long-anticipated Nullagine Aquatic Centre is on track to open before the end of the year, with final construction works now progressing.
Key components still to be completed include rock pitching and concreting works, with the finished centre to feature a 25m multi-lane lap pool, a toddler pool, shaded seating areas, change-room facilities and a kiosk.
The project was initially expected to be completed by “early 2025”, but that expectation moved to July, and now October, with construction having begun in late 2023.
Acknowledging the extended time, calling it a “lengthy process”, Shire of East Pilbara President, Anthony Middleton was quoted by the North West Telegraph as stating "it was identified in the 2021 Strategic Recreation Masterplan that a pool was wanted in Nullagine.
“Four years later, we’re delivering on that.”
Councillor Middleton also highlighted the broader community benefits of the facility, adding "we have an ageing dynamic, and we want to target leisure spaces for the youth but also older adults who can use that pool for physiotherapy and the like."
The project is a partnership between the Shire of East Pilbara, the Australian Government and Atlas Iron with the shire’s 2023/24 budget listing a $1.6 million spend on the facility, plus $460,000 put aside that year for lighting there and at the local netball courts.
