Developing new sport and recreation opportunities in East Hamilton

A new partnership between Hamilton City Council, Sport Waikato and the University of Waikato is aiming to increase participation and utilisation of community recreation and sport facilities in East Hamilton.

This Active Communities project is explained as being “an exciting opportunity for residents of all ages to engage in sport, physical activity and recreation within their area.”

A University of Waikato statement adds “the goal is to attract stronger participation from within the community.

“To achieve this, the project steering group has engaged with local providers to encourage a more collaborative approach in providing services to the community.”

A key element of the project is ensuring that sport and recreation opportunities are developed and East Hamilton residents are drawn to the new East Hamilton Sport and Recreation Hub to participate.

Sport Waikato Chief Executive Matthew Cooper adds "this is an exciting project that will align to the key philosophies of the ... Waikato Sport Facility Plan (namely) collaboration and cooperation."

The East Hamilton Sport and Recreation Hub project supports parties such as clubs, Eastlink (Lugton Park Combined Sports), schools and the University of Waikato (UoW) to work collaboratively to promote the benefits of partnerships which result in growing participation. This includes sharing services, facilities, promotion, events, creative memberships and funding opportunities, ensuring sustainable pathways and opportunities are created.

The project is supported and primarily funded by Sport NZ.
