Derby Day draws landmark crowd to Allianz Stadium and Moore Park

A landmark crowd attended venues at Sydney’s Moore Park on Saturday evening with a total of 79,899 fans attending the Sydney Sixers v Sydney Thunder Big Bash League and Sydney FC v Western Sydney Wanderers A-League fixtures at the SCG and Allianz Stadium.

The two sold out derby fixtures became the biggest events in the history of the SCG precinct, exceeding attendance at the 1965 NSW Rugby League grand final - a match significant for the crowd of 78,056 and for St George's 10th straight premiership.

The BBL's Sydney Smash set a new domestic crowd record at the SCG with 17,346 fans turning out for the WBBL in the afternoon and 39,756 in all for the Thunder's eight wicket win over the Sixers later in the evening.

The A-League Sydney derby sold out for a sixth straight time at Allianz Stadium with a total of 40,143 vocal supporters enjoyed an electric atmosphere as Sydney FC drew nil-all with the Wanderers, continuing their undefeated season.

Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust Chief Executive, Jamie Barkley commented “it was a remarkable evening as nearly 80,000 fans celebrated all that was good about sport in Sydney.

"To have two sold out cross-town derbies played side-by-side at the SCG and Allianz Stadium reaffirms Moore Park as the home of sport in NSW.

"I would like to thank the clubs, FFA, Cricket Australia, Cricket NSW, Transport NSW and the NSW Police for the months of planning that went into this historic night of sport in Sydney.

“I must also pay credit to the A-League and BBL fans who came from all over NSW to cheer on their teams.

"The sporting bonanza continues at Moore Park with Australia to host Pakistan in a One-Day International at the SCG next Sunday before the Sydney Sevens returns to Allianz Stadium for a three-day festival of rugby on the first weekend of February."
