David Gallop named new Venues NSW Chair after Morris Iemma steps down
David Gallop, the former Chief Executive of the NRL and Football Federation Australia, has been named the new Chairman of NSW Government agency Venues NSW.
Gallop will replace Morris Iemma, who only took on the role last month, with the former NSW Premier stepping down over health concerns.
NSW Sports Minister Steve Kamper confirmed late yesterday that Iemma had tendered his resignation as Chair of Venues NSW last week following “a medical episode and the requirement for ongoing treatment”.
Gallop, who was also considered for the Chairperson’s role prior to Iemma's appointement, was selected to replace Iemma, with Minister Kamper stating “David Gallop is a well-recognised and accomplished sports administrator, having led the NRL and FFA over a period of 20 years.
“David will bring valuable experience working with international organisations including FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation to the role.”
Minister Kamper asked that Iemma’s privacy be respected, so he can “recover and rehabilitate in peace”.
In a statement, Gallop said his appointment came following an “unusual set of circumstances” and he sent his best wishes to Iemma.
He added “I have always thought that the Venues NSW was an organisation that I could bring considerable experience and value to. I know many of the current board members and hold them in high regard.
“The venues themselves are truly hallowed turf for me. I started going to Test cricket at the SCG as a 10-year-old seeing Ashley Mallet take the wicket to win the Ashes in 74-75.
Gallop said the past few weeks had shown the “power of sport and particularly women’s sport”, adding “I have watched with pride and excitement given my previous role in football which included commencing the bid process for the tournament with the Federal Government.”
Iemma was selected for the role of Chairperson following a process led by the Premier’s Department and the NSW Office of Sport.
An Assessment Panel comprised of Office of Sport Chief Executive Karen Jones, Diane Lesson (nominee of the Acting Secretary, Premier’s Department) and Axiom Managing Director Peter Perry shortlisted the candidates.
