COX Architecture appointed as lead consultant for Perth Cultural Centre rejuvenation

COX Architecture - a design focused contemporary architectural practice with studios located in every major Australian city and a history spanning 60 years - has been awarded the $2.7 million contract for Perth Culture Centre (PCC) rejuvenation aimed at enlivening and activating the precinct for residents and tourists. COX Architecture will take the project to the next stage after the masterplan and flythrough were released earlier this year.

The PCC precinct is set to undergo a $35 million revamp thanks to a $25 million Western Australian Government funding contribution and a $10 million Australian Government contribution as part of the $1.5 billion Perth City Deal.

An overarching goal is to transform PCC into a connected, thriving and welcoming precinct for residents and tourists, connecting the major cultural and learning institutions in the area, which include the:

  • Art Gallery of Western Australia;

  • State Library of WA;

  • WA Museum Boola Bardip;

  • State Theatre WA;

  • State Records Office of Western Australia;

  • Perth Institute of Contemporary Art; and

  • The Blue Room Theatre.

Planned development of the precinct involves a family-friendly approach with a new focal point, the creation of a new children's play space, shaded areas, better lighting and security and accessibility.

Works will include the demolition of the amphitheatre and the demolition of the Art Gallery car park at the eastern end of the precinct, which will form better connections to Beaufort Street.

Overall the project will open up underused spaces and create a better environment for visitors. It will also lead to job creation and boost the local tourism and hospitality industries.
