Council moves forward with plan to revitalise Perth's Cottesloe Beach

The Town of Cottesloe is moving forward with its plans to revitalise the Cottesloe foreshore following the acceptance of a detailed design for the project at a recent Council Meeting.

The Cottesloe Foreshore Masterplan and subsequent detail design aims to revitalise the Cottesloe beachfront and make it more accessible for all. Parking has been refocused to the east, and safety along the foreshore is paramount. Improved beach access, additional recreational space, wide footpaths and an improved look and feel of Marine Parade are key elements of the approved design.

Reducing traffic speed and volume is also a key element of the design. This includes road treatments to slow traffic such as narrowing Marine Parade, and the addition of pedestrian islands for safe crossing.

Cottesloe Councillors agreed the redevelopment design masterplan at the end of March, including a last-minute decision to not seek public feedback on the public unisex toilet, which would stand 6.8 metres-high to allow for ventilation.

The subject of 13 design proposals since 2002, the Council will now seek funding support for the $22 million plan from the Federal and Western Australian Governments.

Commenting on the project, Cottesloe Mayor, Phil Angers stated “an upgraded, safer, pedestrian and cycle-friendly Cottesloe foreshore will be a huge benefit for not only the community and local businesses but for the many visitors who come to the Town.”

The plan also includes an amphitheatre of grass terraces, a lookout and fitness area, and removal of the 144-bay carpark to be replaced with a pedestrian piazza and 20 spaces for vehicles.

The Town has budgeted $950,000 for the project, which is expected to start mid-next year.
