Contemporary music fund supports 15 Western Australian artists performing at SXSW Sydney

The inaugural SXSW Sydney event – the first time the SXSW event has been held outside of Texas since its conception in 1987 - will take place from 15th to 22nd October 2023, with an extensive program that includes a conferences, music, screen and games festivals and a technology expo.

The Western Australian Government is supporting 15 Western Australian contemporary music artists to travel and perform at the sought-after SXSW Sydney showcases, which have proven a springboard for many stellar international music careers.

Total funding for the targeted initiative is $75,000.

The acts successful in securing a spot representing WA at the prestigious conference, selected by the SXSW Sydney programming team, are Adrian Dzuke; Alter Boy; Anesu, Death by Denim, DICE, Dulcie, Grievous Bodily Calm, Inkabee, MALI JO$E, Mitch Santiago, Siobhan Cotchin, South Summit, Suneater, SUPEREGO and Chiseko.

Grievous Bodily Calm posted on their Facebook page “so excited to head back to Eora/Sydney in a couple of weeks for SXSW Sydney!”

WA Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman shared "this is an amazing opportunity for WA to showcase our exceptional talent, with SXSW® being held in Australia for the first time.

"Unique industry opportunities like these can be harder to access for West Coast music acts and we wanted to ensure that none of these exceptional rising performers are restricted from taking up the prestigious offer to participate in the SXSW Sydney 2023 music showcases.

"Congratulations to these 15 exceptional music acts from WA! I know you will leave a strong impression at SXSW Sydney.”

The Contemporary Music Fund is managed by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and assists homegrown contemporary music artists with projects that enable them to produce and promote their work, along with building links nationally and internationally.
