Construction tender awarded for Warburton Mountain Bike Destination
The Warburton Mountain Bike Destination is one step closer to becoming a reality following the tender for construction being awarded to World Trail at a recent Yarra Ranges Council meeting and the receipt of further funding of $2.3 million.
Stage 1 of the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination project includes approximately 110 kilometres of mountain bike trails in the hills surrounding Warburton. The signature trail, ‘Drop-A-K’ will feature a 26 kilometre decent through National Park, fern gullies and a pristine environment, sure to attract international visitors.
Explaining that the destination would attract 165,000 visitors per year and create 122 new jobs in the area, Yarra Ranges Councillor Jim Child commented "these new trails mean we can cement Warburton’s place on the map for cycling and enhance Victoria’s reputation as a premier mountain biking destination.
“The project will encourage new business to the area, attract visitors and other tourism activities which is much needed after the Sanitarium factory, hospital and major banks closed in the mid 90s.
“It will also offer opportunities for participation in physical activity, enhancing the community’s health and wellbeing."
World Trail is a recognised industry leading design and construction company and will bring significant national and international experience in the design and delivery of this world class mountain bike destination. Among their successful projects is the famous Blue Derby, a destination that has delivered great outcomes for tourism, the economy and jobs in North West Tasmania.
A construction date will be announced following further consultation with stakeholders and the community.
