Construction companies progress to tender stage and public art contract awarded for Australian Hockey Centre

The Expression of Interest stage for the Australian Hockey Centre is now complete with three companies progressing to tender stage on the $163 million project.

Three construction companies - Georgiou Group, ADCO Constructions and Built - have progressed to the tender stage, marking a significant step forward in the delivery of a world-class, purpose-built facility in Bentley, which will serve as the new home for Hockey Australia's Centre of Excellence and High Performance Program.

Also announced - local Western Australian artists Jon Tarry and James Morton, working together as TARRMACstudio, have been awarded the Australian Hockey Centre's $576,000 public art contract.

TARRMACstudio was chosen for their elegant artwork concepts that cleverly reflect the theme of movement with the aim of connecting the new hockey facility with the broader community and national sporting culture.

The artists collaborated closely with Noongar Elder Sharyn Egan who helped guide the artistic narrative to highlight Aboriginal connections and history.

Jon Tarry is a visual artist who has worked on public commissions at Optus Stadium, Elizabeth Quay and Kings Park Naturescape. James Morton is a multidisciplinary artist, collaborator, and creative facilitator and artist Sharyn Egan works in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, and woven forms.

The Australian Hockey Centre is a major investment by the Western Australian Government with the major capital project being delivered through the PlayOn WA: 2030 by 2030 initiative.

The facility wil feature:

  • four outdoor pitches, with at least two at international standard;

  • a specialist high-performance training centre;

  • an indoor hockey centre; and

  • a stadium capable of hosting up to 10,000 spectators in event mode.

The facility will also include modern broadcast capabilities, community change rooms, and administration offices for Hockey WA and Hockey Australia, ensuring the centre meets both high-performance and community needs.

The WA Government's successful bid in 2022 secured Perth as the home of hockey for the next 18 years, supporting four Olympic cycles and reinforcing the State's rich hockey legacy.

WA Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti noted "The Australian Hockey Centre is about more than just infrastructure - it's about creating opportunities for Western Australians to participate, compete and thrive in sport.

"This project is another way the WA Government is promoting a culture of healthy living and participation in sport, from grassroots to elite performance for all Western Australians.

"This is a major capital project being delivered through the PlayOn WA: 2030 by 2030 initiative.

"The central location at Bentley provides supporting amenities, is in close proximity to transport and work hubs, accommodation needs and provides fantastic opportunities for future growth.

"The Australian Hockey Centre will be a beacon for hockey excellence, attracting international competition and fostering the next generation of champions."
