City of Greater Bendigo to end seasonal pool passes

The City of Greater Bendigo is considering a report proposing changes to the fee structure for its aquatic and recreation facilities.

A statement from the Council indicates that, following consultation with facility operators Belgravia Leisure and Bendigo Regional YMCA, annual and six month passes are to be eliminated - as a result of only nine annual passes having been sold in the past financial year and the administration of the passes being "difficult".

It is also proposed that a new category of membership, a Rural Pool Pass be introduced for Marong, Elmore, Goornong, Raywood and Heathcote pools.

Greater Bendigo Active and Healthy Communities Manager Patrick Jess said the Rural Pool Pass would provide access to one facility, stating "it is thought residents in these communities will want to use their local pool only, rather than travel to use a pool in other towns across the municipality. Reciprocal rights memberships would still be available, provided Council supports the recommendation."

Following a successful first season operating under volunteer management, it is also recommended a lease for Golden Square Pool be issued for three years.

The report highlights the cost of running the City’s 12 pools and attendance over the past three financial years, which has generally risen.

Jess said the figures represent a cost/benefit analysis of the pool service the City provides, adding “Council has allocated $300,000 in the 2014/15 Budget for renewal works across our 12 pools including painting, leak repairs and plant renovations.

“The recommendations in the report are to ensure the City can continue to support the pools without additional subsidy and provide residents across the municipality with good aquatic facilities to support their health and wellbeing.”
