Christchurch's new One NZ Stadium to open with hosting of 2026 rugby Super Round
Christchurch's new One NZ Stadium has been announced as the host of Super Rugby Pacific’s returning Super Round in April next year - marking the first time the fixtures have taken place in New Zealand.
Set to officially open the 25,000-seat venue over the 2026 Anzac Day weekend from 24th to 26th April, the venue will stage five games of the returning event.
Built to replace the city’s Lancaster Park after it was deemed unsafe after the devastating 2011 Canterbury earthquake, the provision of the new roofed stadium is one of the last ‘anchor’ projects in Christchurch’s rejuvenation.
Announcing the hosting, Christchurch Mayor, Phil Mauger advised “the opening event at One New Zealand Stadium will be a major milestone in the remarkable comeback story of our city.
“It is great to share that with our friends and neighbours from all across the country, Australia and the Pacific.
“We are really proud to be able to launch this amazing venue on behalf of Christchurch and know it will be a place where great memories are made.”
Super Rugby’s Crusaders will christen their new home with the first match of the weekend on Friday night, after which the weekend will feature the traditional Hurricanes-Brumbies and Blues-Reds fixtures. The remaining games - which will conclude with a second double header on Sunday 26th April - will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Super Rugby Pacific chief executive, Jack Mesley added "Super Round is a celebration of what makes Super Rugby Pacific special. Fans can expect fast-paced rugby, classic rivalries, and an electric stadium atmosphere as supporters across the Pacific come together to celebrate Super Round.
"Hosting this event in Ōtautahi Christchurch is a fantastic way to showcase the best of our competition. We're excited to work with the city and the Crusaders to deliver something unforgettable."
Featuring teams from Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, Super Round debuted in 2022 and the first three editions were held at AAMI Park in Melbourne. The event did not take place this year following the withdrawal of the Melbourne Rebels.
