Christchurch receives tourism boost
Canterbury tourism, with earthquake-damaged Christchurch at its heart, is to get a $1.6 million boost from the New Zealand Government, Christchurch Airport and Christchurch City Council.
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said that the funding would help Canterbury tourism spread the much-needed message that Christchurch (New Zealand's second-largest city after Auckland) was ''open for business. ''
Prime Minister Key added that the venture was a collaborative approach aimed to also help Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism (CCT) "stabilise its business and operations and rebuild existing tourism and travel activity."
The New Zealand Herald quoted CCT Chief Executive Tim Hunter saying that tourism remains one of the most important drivers of the New Zealand economy "so it is vital we get our tourism industry back on its feet as quickly as possible."
Despire infrastructure damage, Christchurch remains one of the top five holiday destinations for New Zealanders. The city holds fourth place behind Wellington, Auckland and Queenstown in the Mood of the New Zealand Traveller Survey, released by the Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIANZ).
