Carrara Stadium to set a new standard in environmentally sustainable design

Announcing that the Gold Coastâs new Carrara Stadium will be completed by May next year and will host the AFLâs newest club, the Gold Coast Suns, first game at the venue on Saturday 28th May 2011 (Round 10), Queensland Sports Minister Phil Reeves has also spoken of the stadiumâs environmentally sustainable design.
Minister Reeves explained that the âthe inclusion of the solar panelling (on the venueâs roof) will generate around 275,000kW hours of energy per annum.?
This amounts to about 20% of the stadiumâs power needs.
Writing in the latest (September/October 2010) issue of Australasian Leisure Management, Populous architects Paul Henry and Richard Breslin explain that the new âGold Coast stadium will be the first stadium solar power generator, with the integration of a âsolar haloâ into the leading edge of the roof. 20% of the stadiumâs power will be provided through photo-voltaic cells integrated into the solar halo.
âThis innovation combined with potential LED light fittings, extensive water harvesting with 600,000 litre tanks located around the venue, and a new integrated bus transport centre at the front plaza, has created what is possibly Australiaâs greenest stadium design.?
Construction of the 25,000-seat stadium, by Queensland construction firm, Watpac, is well advanced with roof trusses and shade fabric erected and seating being installed.
The only remnant of the former Carrara Stadium are its six light towers.
Populous architects Paul Henry and Richard Breslinâs feature, explaining how modern stadia can be cost effective and environmentally sensitive, is published in the September/October 2010 issue of Australasian Leisure Management.
