Canterbury Bankstown council proposes 10-year vision for aquatic and recreation centres
The City of Canterbury Bankstown is undertaking an extensive community consultation inviting feedback on a proposed 10-year Leisure and Aquatic Strategic Plan for the city.
Mayor Khal Asfour said the plan will help guide the upgrading of existing facilities and the establishment of new centres across the City.
Mayor Asfour explained "we carried out a two-year review of our leisure and aquatics facilities, which included extensive community consultation.
"It also included obtaining expert independent advice, based on population growth, frequency of use, identifying multi-purpose opportunities and accessibility, and the location of existing facilities in other areas bordering Canterbury-Bankstown."
The draft plan proposes the construction of two new multi-purpose facilities, on the existing sites of Canterbury and Max Parker Leisure and Aquatic Centres.
Mayor Asfour added "we want more than just facilities that people come to for a quick swim. That is why we are proposing facilities that a family can stay at all day.
"The plan also proposes that existing facilities at Birrong and Roselands should be upgraded, and a water splash park constructed at Greenacre.
"While we’d like to build a multi-purpose leisure facility in every suburb, it’s just not feasible or viable, so it’s important we locate our future services in appropriate locations.
"We now want to hear from residents again. We’ve listened to them on what they want, now we need them to provide their feedback on this proposed plan."
The Leisure and Aquatic Strategic Plan can be viewed until 12th March 2019 with a series of residents’ information sessions currently underway.
