Canberra Olympic Pool reopening not a long term solution

With the outdoor diving pool at the Canberra Olympic Pool set to reopen, the ACT Government has admitted that recently completed repair works at the facility are only expected to extend its life by a few years.

ACT Sport and Recreation Minister Shane Rattenbury explained that work to fix a leak at the pool had been undertaken over winter and expected the facility to remain open all summer.

However, Minister Rattenbury said it was not a long-term solution, telling 666 ABC Canberra "Civic Pool's been open for essentially 60 years now and there's no doubt it's coming to the end of its life.

"I think with these works we'll get several more years out of the pool and the Government's in the process of planning new facilities.

"We've got the Molonglo pool set to come online and we do want to put a new aquatic facility somewhere in the city region and so we're planning that at the moment."

Minister Rattenbury expects a new pool to open in the suburb of Molonglo to open before a replacement pool in Civic, with Canberra's diving pool set to potentially move to Molonglo.

He explained that the ACT Government was also considering putting diving facilities in a different part of Canberra as part of its delivery of new pools, adding “we're still having some consultations on that and talking to people about the best options.

"I think what's attractive about Molonglo is we're looking at putting the pool in the Stromlo Forest Park and with all the other facilities out there we're starting to create an excellent sporting hub at Stromlo.

"I think having diving out there would be a really great option."
