Cairns Regional Council supports historic rugby league competition
Cairns Regional Council will provide more than $11,500 in funding to support FNQ Rugby League to host the 2023 Foley Shield at Barlow Park on 29th April to 1st May.
The Foley Shield is a rugby league competition contested by representative players from Mackay, Townsville and Cairns and has been held annually over the May long weekend since 1948. Historically held in Townsville, it is proposed that future Foley Shield competitions will be held in Cairns every three years.
The three-day competition will feature two games per day and includes men’s and women’s representative team from each of the cities.
Council will provide $11,739 (ex GST) through its Community Partnerships Grant to support FNQ Rugby League, previously known as Cairns and District Rugby League, to host the 75th Foley Shield competition in Cairns.
