Cadbury partners with Taronga to help save the Northern Corroboree Frog

Cadbury Dairy Milk Freddo has partnered with Taronga to help with the conservation efforts in saving the Northern Corroboree Frog - one of Australia’s most iconic amphibian species, famous for their striking yellow and black stripes on their back, sides and legs.

These frogs are found in the marshlands, forests, and subalpine bogs of southern-eastern NSW and ACT. Catching a glimpse of these stunning creatures is rare as this frog is one of Australia’s most critically endangered species. It’s estimated that there are less than 3,000 calling male Northern Corroboree Frogs left in the wild, with one of the three genetic populations (the Northern Brindabella population) estimated to only have as little as 100 mature frogs left. The low numbers are due to the deadly chytrid fungus and the natural disasters that have impacted their habitats.

Taronga Conservation Society Australia has been working in partnership with NSW Department of Planning and Environment to breed and release Northern Corroboree Frogs. This breeding is done on-site at Taronga Zoo Sydney inside the purpose-built Northern Corroboree Frog exhibit which guests have the opportunity to experience as part of their visit to Taronga Zoo Sydney.

Since the start of the program, Taronga keepers have released over 2,000 eggs back into the wild. These eggs take around 4-5 years until they are considered ‘adult’ and are ready to breed themselves, so successful egg releases are incredibly important and vital to the survival of the species.

Taronga keepers also facilitate egg collections from different locations in the Fiery Ranges, to establish insurance populations in case the frogs’ populations are affected by further natural disasters or disease outbreaks.

Taronga’s work would not be possible without the support of their partners, including Cadbury Dairy Milk Freddo.
