Brisbane Pools Reduce Water Consumption
Innovative water saving initiatives implemented in Brisbane City Council aquatic centres have seen pool water consumption reduced by 72% since 2005.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman told Australasian Leisure Management that "our pools are increasingly water efficient, with new developments using no more water than that of a residential development, with water being supplied through rainwater harvesting and bio-retention systems."
Among recent Brisbane City Council developments:
The new pools at Runcorn and Mt Gravatt East use 75% less water than traditional public pools by utilising best practice technology;
The Council is working to reduce the water consumption of its existing pool network and has already managed to reduce consumption by 70% over three years.
The Council's new $7.5 million swimming pool complex at Morningside's Colmslie Recreation Reserve, scheduled for a mid-year opening, will also utilise state-of-the-art water saving technology.
The development of the Runcorn and Mt Gravatt Pools and the Colmslie Aquatic Centre was featured in the January/February 2010 issue of Australasian Leisure Management.
