Boxing for fitness: a rising fitness phenomenon
Over the years 'Boxing for Fitness' has experienced many cultural changes in the health and fitness industry.
While at times lying dormant and on the brink of extinction Boxing for Fitness has managed to pave the way for many group exercise revolutions such as Boot Camp, Tai Bo, and freestyle circuit classes.
Not limited to just group exercise Boxing for Fitness has also been a popular training method for Personal Trainers and Gym Instructors.
Thump Boxing Managing Director Christian Marchegiani believes that "while there are many myths and training concepts surrounding Boxing for Fitness one conclusion remains ï¾ the benefits!
"Some of the most common mistakes trainers can make is not knowing the basics of a simple and effective workout and how to get the most out of Boxing for Fitness.
"Boxing as a sport has been around for hundreds of years ï¾ seen as the 'manly art of self defence'. Not until 1866 did it become a properly officiated sport with new rules, guidelines, and compulsory wearing of boxing gloves.
"Since then boxing has developed immensely with many weight divisions and numerous governing bodies distinguishing the difference between professional bouts and amateur bouts.
"The first real evidence of boxing becoming a fitness phenomenon was probably around the time when Police Boys Clubs and YMCA's were bursting at the seams with young men hoping to carve out a career in the ring.
"As boxers retired from the sport there was not much for them to do besides stay around the boxing fraternity and hope that they too could become trainers of the 'sweet science'. "As is usually the case the dream of training the next big thing doesn't always eventuate so trainers needed to find another way of making a dollar.
"They began taking their skilful art outside the boxing gyms and started to train members of the general public on boxing skills, technique, and fitness.
"Charging only a few dollars per session this became a very popular training method especially for people who did not wish to attend a gym and do weights as this was the only option available in the bygone era.
"You could almost say that boxing trainers were the first real Personal Trainers on the fitness scene and planted the seeds for a cultural revolution in the method of losing weight and keeping fit.
"By the 1980s boxing for fitness had become a craze with trainers running classes in most parks across Australia as well as gyms and PT studios. The good old 'boxing circuit' had developed and group exercise timetables could not get enough of it.
"Boxing is moving forward in a big way. Identifying the need for quality education and training, many Cert 3 and 4 providers have taken the extra step in offering their students a complete package of career options in fitness meaning students can now expect to graduate with the right accreditation in boxing for fitness."
