Blacktown City Council tenders for first synthetic surface for rugby league

Blacktown City Council has released a tender for the design and construction of what will be Australia’s first artificial turf field for rugby league – to be laid at the new NRL Centre in the Western Sydney suburb of Kellyville Ridge.

Blacktown City Council has committed $3.83 million towards the project with the NRL adding $600,000 to the project that will include a full size synthetic pitch, two mini natural turf fields, an amenities building, a playground and car parking facilities on the adjacent land.

Allowing matches to be played in all weather conditions the development has been welcomed by Kellyville-Rouse Hill Bushrangers Rugby League Club President Michael Tiskins who stated “it makes the grounds weather proof and considering some of the grounds we currently play on, the artificial pitches is not such a bad thing.”

The facility would be used by local clubs for training and competitions, community ‘come and try’ days and other rugby league programs.

The NRL Centre is proposed to be developed within the Council’s Reserve 811 which is bordered by Fyfe Road, Carindale Street and The Ponds Boulevard, Kellyville Ridge.

The tender closes on 15th June.
