BDP Pattern delivers second phase of Yas Marina circuit pit and paddock expansion
BDP Pattern, in collaboration with venue managers and operators Ethara, has completed the second phase of its transformative work at Yas Marina Circuit - enhancing the Pit & Paddock building and redefining the Paddock Club hospitality experience.
Manchester (UK)-based Building Design Partnership Limited (BDP) is an international, interdisciplinary practice of architects, designers, engineers, and urbanists.
The 60,000-capacity Yas Marina Circuit is the venue for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The circuit was designed by Hermann Tilke (German engineer and motorsport racing driver) and is situated on Yas Island, near Abu Dhabi (UAE). It is a technologically advanced 5.554 km (3.452 mile) racetrack.
The second phase transformation builds on the achievements of Phase 1, completed ahead of the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which introduced the world-first Podium Club with its transparent cooldown room, a relocated podium overhanging the track, and expanded VIP suites and terraces.
The second phase introduces a striking West Entrance that serves as a grand gateway to the Paddock Club and provides a dedicated entry point for drivers and teams. The entrance features a dramatic shading structure that incorporates Arabic mashrabiya patterns alongside tensioned fabric elements, blending cultural significance with modern design. Elevated vantage points at the entrance offer guests unparalleled views of drivers and teams entering the paddock, as well as behind-the-scenes action in one of the circuit’s most exciting areas.
The rooftop of the Pit & Paddock building has been entirely reimagined to create a world-class hospitality experience. Additional suite spaces have been introduced, increasing capacity and enhancing guest offerings. The expanded terraces now provide breathtaking views of key track sections, the Marina, and the W Hotel, including a podium terrace positioned directly above the winners’ celebrations. Improved connectivity between levels, facilitated by a new scissor stair linking the West Entrance to the rooftop, ensures a seamless flow for guests.
To further enhance the venue, three levels of permanent seating terraces have been added, offering premium trackside views. These terraces provide comfortable and immersive spectator experiences, complementing both the Phase 1 suites and the newly developed rooftop spaces.
Luke Harrison, Architect Director at BDP Pattern notes “this is a game changing step forward for the Yas Marina Circuit, cementing its reputation as the place where champions are crowned. Our partnership with Ethara to deliver the next evolution of the venue has enhanced the iconic architecture with a new West Entrance, expanded suite offerings, and unmatched rooftop terraces that provide breathtaking views of the track and surrounding landmarks. The project has been about designing innovative, functional spaces that deliver world-class experiences for fans, drivers, and teams.
“Overall, the new design underlines this venue’s standing in the motorsport industry, setting a global benchmark for innovation, elegance, and hospitality, with transformative spaces that connect people to the excitement and energy of racing.”
