Australind skatepark opening a result of extensive community consultation
After seven years of fundraising and development, the Shire of Harvey in south west Western Australia has opened the new $1 million Australind Skate Park.
Opened at the end of July, the project came about after a petition with 400 signatures, raised by two young local residents, was presented to Council in 2010.
Setting out to upgrade an ageing facility, the design of the upgraded park caters for a variety of users including skaters, rollerbladers, scooters and BMX riders.
Developed with the community participating in its design and capacity from the beginning, funding for the project came from the Shire of Harvey, Lotterywest and the Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation through a Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) grant.
Other sponsorship contributions were received from Alcoa, JAK Civil, Lake Preston Lime and community fundraising through the Australian Sports Foundation and coordinated by the Australind Skate Park committee.
Australind has the largest youth population in the Shire of Harvey and is one of the fastest growing areas in the south west. Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that in 2016, those aged under 14 years made up 25% of the population.
The tender for the design and construction of the park was listed on the Australasian Leisure Management Tenders page - see: www.ausleisure.com.au/news/tender-for-design-and-construction-of-australind-skatepark/
