Australian Sports People test positive to banned substance
Nine Australian athletes may be banned for up to two years after testing positive to a banned substance found in sports supplements and some recreational drugs.
In a statement issued last night, the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority said it was investigating "a number of positive test results to methylhexaneamine" returned by Australian athletes. ASADA would not say which athletes or sports were involved.
The authority said in a warning that it was "advising all Australian athletes subject to in-competition doping control to carefully consider their use of supplements and products containing methylhexaneamine", adding that four Jamaican athletes - Yohan Blake, Marvin Anderson, Allodin Fothergill and Lansford Spence - were suspended for three-months last year after testing positive to the drug during the country's national titles.
ASADA Chief Executive Officer, Aurora Andruska confirmed that nine athletes had tested positive for methylhexaneamine. This spike in positive test results is a timely reminder to all athletes to exercise the utmost caution in checking the contents of supplements and other products they choose to use.
âASADA wants to get the warning out to the Australian sporting community to be on the lookout for any supplement or product containing methylhexaneamine.
âMethylhexaneamine is appearing more and more in doping test results and has been linked to a number of popular supplements.?
Methylhexaneamine has been the subject of a number of recent international doping cases with some athletes involved reporting that they unknowingly ingested the banned substance when using supplements or other products.
ASADA is working closely with Australiaâs sporting organisations to help them warn athletes and support personnel about methylhexaneamine.
A formal advisory has also been placed on the ASADA website
