Australian Sports Commission presents 2022 Media Awards
The latest edition of the Australian Sports Commission's Media Awards have been presented at a gala event at the MCG.
News Corp's sports media team collected the award for Best Coverage of a Sporting Event, following their reporting of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, one of four awards won by the team throughout the night.
The coverage included the development of a dedicated newsroom, which saw a range of engaging content delivered to 11.8m people over the duration of the Games.
Quinn Rooney claimed Best Sports Photography for his incredible image ‘Diving for gold,’ featuring Emma McKeown diving into the water for the 200m Individual Medley in Birmingham.
Veteran Channel 7 reporter Matt Carmichael was awarded Best Coverage of Sport for People with Disability, which included his on-the-ground coverage at Birmingham.
In other awards, ABC presenter and award-winning journalist Tracey Holmes was announced as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
She has worked in journalism and communications for more than 30 years having started her career at the national broadcaster in 1989, hosting Grandstand before going on to host radio and television programs around the world.
Holmes has covered 14 Olympic Games and is regarded as one of the most influential sports broadcasters in Australia.
Federal Minister for Sport Anika Wells presented the award for Best coverage of a community sport issue - rural and regional media to Zoe Keenan and Dinushi Dias from ABC South West WA for their investigation into racism and sexism at the South Bunbury Football Club.
The evening saw media professionals and organisations from across Australia acknowledged for their coverage of sport, with awards recognising profiles, broadcast, inclusive sport and community sport issues.
Following its criticism of the Commission’s Clearinghouse initiative, Australasian Leisure Management was not invited to the event.
