Australian Open named Best International Sporting Event at 2017 SPIA Asia Awards

The Australian Open 2017 has taken home the top award for Best International Sporting Event at the SPIA Asia 2017 Sports Industry Awards.

Announced at the third annual SPIA Asia Sports Industry Awards in Bangkok, Thailand this week, the tournament also received the bronze award for Best Sports Event Hospitality Offering of the Year, a major coup following a significant revamp in its hospitality experiences over the past couple of years.

Welcoming the international recognition, Tennis Australia Chief Executive and Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley stated “as the biggest sporting event in the world in January, and as the Grand Slam of the Asia Pacific, it’s very gratifying to receive these two awards.

“We have a fantastic team of people who help bring this world-class event to life each year, and this acknowledgement is a credit to all who make this a memorable tournament for players and fans.”

SPIA Asia categories are recognised with gold, silver and bronze trophies for an organisation’s achievements and contribution to the sports industry during the past 12 months.

Visit Victoria landed silver in the Best Sports Tourism Destination of the Year category, underlining Melbourne’s global reputation as sporting events location.

The Australian Open 2018 will take place at Melbourne Park from 15th to 28th January.
