Australia welcomes 2014 with fireworks displays across the nation
Australia welcomed 2014 with millions of people around the country dazzled by massive fireworks displays.
About 1.5 million people gathered around and on Sydney Harbour to watch the country's biggest fireworks which featured pyrotechnic displays launched from the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.
It was the first time in more than a decade that the Sydney Opera House had played a major role in the extravaganza, with fireworks exploding above the venue's sails.
Artist Reg Mombassa, best known for his work for the surfwear brand Mambo, was the creative ambassador for this year's display.
In Melbourne, about 500,000 people flocked to the CBD for celebrations while around 50,000 people are thought to have gathered in Canberra's civic centre.
Free public transport and extra buses and trains were put on in most major cities to get revellers safely home.
