Australia drops plans to host 2021 and 2023 FINA World Championships

Australasian Leisure Management has learned that Australia has dropped out of contention to host the 2021 and 2023 editions of the FINA World Championships and World Masters Championships.

World swimming governing body FINA disclosed the latest update for potential bidding countries at a gathering in Lausanne on Tuesday.

In June, FINA said that, among preliminary bids from 10 cities in seven countries, it had received an expression of interest from Australia, with Melbourne and Sydney proposed host cities.

As of this week, this preliminary bid has been withdrawn with a bid from the United Arab Emirates now being considered along along with bides from Argentina, China (Wuhan or Nanjing), Germany (two potential cities), Japan, Turkey and Qatar.

Following this year’s FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia the next two editions of the World Championships and World Masters Championships will take place in Budapest in 2017 and in 2019 in Gwangju.

Australia has hosted the FINA World Swimming Championships on three occasions: in Melbourne in 2007, and in Perth in 1998 and 1991.
