Australia bids for 2015 World Netball Championships
Netball Australia Chief Executive Kate Palmer has announced that Australia has submitted a bid to host the World Netball Championships in 2015.
If successful, Netball Australia will partner with Netball New South Wales and the New South Wales government through Events NSW to deliver the event, which will feature the worldâs top 16 teams competing over eight days.
Palmer said that hosting the World Netball Championships will provide Netball Australia with an opportunity to raise the sportâs profile within the sport industry and community, government and corporate sectors in Australia, stating âwe have the capacity to deliver a commercially successful event and to build a development and education legacy for netball nationally and internationally.
âSydney is the ideal host city for WNC 2015 and the Olympic Park precinct provides the perfect setting for the event. The expertise and knowledge of the personnel within the three organisations will ensure that we have a formidable team to deliver the event on behalf of the International Netball Federation (INF).?
âAustralia has not hosted an INF netball event since 1991 and there is a whole generation of Australians who have not had the opportunity to experience the wonderful sense of community and culture that comes with this type of event.?
NSW Minister for Major Events Kevin Greene recalled that Sydney holds the world record netball crowd with 14,339 people attending an Australia v New Zealand test match at Acer Arena in November 2004 and that Netball NSW, with its 105,000 participants, was the largest state-based netball organisation in the world.
âOur credentials in hosting major events are outstanding and a great legacy of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. This should give the International Netball Federation great confidence in our abilities as a host city.?
England, which last hosted the Championship in 1995, has also submitted a bid.
The successful bidding nation will be announced at the 2011 World Netball Championships in Singapore.
The Austraian Netball Diamonds are the reigning World Champions and have won the tournament nine out of a possible 12 times.
