ASGA welcomes Erica Berchtold as new Board President

The sporting and active lifestyle goods industry has welcomed the announcement that Erica Berchtold, Managing Director of Sports Retailing with the Super Retail Group (owners of Rebel Sport), will be the new President of the Australian Sporting Goods Association (ASGA).

Erica was appointed at the ASGA Board meeting on Thursday 19th June 2014 and replaces outgoing President Greg Kerr from adidas.

Announcing the appointment, ASGA Executive Director Shannon Walker explained “the Board is very pleased and excited to appoint Erica as the President of the Board.

“As the Managing Director of the largest sporting goods retailer in Australia, Erica has an unrivalled view of the industry and will play an increasingly important role advancing the interests of the entire sector.”

Welcoming her appointment as President, Berchtold stated “I’m looking forward to taking on the exciting challenge of ASGA President. In the last several years the Association has gone from strength-to-strength and I look forward to continuing that forward momentum.

“In the coming months we’ll be talking to the sector about the importance of membership in the association, as the only real way of making the industry stronger. We’ll continue to look at political issue like the low value threshold and anti-counterfeiting and we’ll improve our service offering to members.”

Erica Berchtold joined Super Retail Group in November 2011 as Managing Director – Sports Retailing, following the acquisition of Rebel Group. She is responsible for Merchandise, Marketing and Retail Operations of the Rebel, Amart Sports, Workout World and Goldcross Cycles businesses.

Prior to joining Super Retail Group, Berchtold held a number of senior management positions including General Manager of two women's apparel businesses for Specialty Fashion Group, General Manager of Merchandise & Marketing for Rebel and National Product Management roles at Harvey Norman and has over 15 years of Australian retail experience.

The Australian Sporting Goods Association was formed in 1981 as the industry association representing a broad spectrum of sporting goods and active lifestyle industry participants, including manufacturers, importers, wholesalers and retailers.

ASGA is a leading industry voice on issues impacting the health, trade, regulation and taxation of the sporting and active lifestyle industries. ASGA aims to foster market growth, provide services and advocate for increased participation in sport and physical activity.
