Aqualogan recognised with national award

Logan City Council's aqualogan Springwood facility has been recognised by one of Australia's peak swimming school bodies.

At Swim Australia's recent national convention on the Gold Coast, aqualogan Springwood took out the award for best Environmental Practices.

Logan City Council, Health Sport and Community Services Chairperson, Councillor Phil Pidgeon (Division 9), said the national recognition of the facility's environmental practices from the governing swim body was a real coup.

Councillor Pidgeon stated "Council's aqualogan programs are dedicated to making Logan a cleaner, greener and healthier place to live, work and play. To be recognised with this award from one of Australia's top swimming school bodies as the most environmentally friendly swimming facility is a real credit to the work and time that has been invested in the facility by council."

Councillrr Pidgeon said the new systems and treatments which had been implemented by council had resulted in massive savings in water, energy and carbon emissions, adding "our aim over the past two years has been to implement a range of energy and water saving initiatives and to reduce water usage and carbon output while continuing to deliver high quality swim programs.

"To create these changes we've implemented a backwash recycling system which dramatically reduces the amount of waste water going to sewer and a massive 7,807 kilolitres of water is saved each year. It also saves the previously wasted heat resident in the backwash water.

Divisional Councillor Lisa Bradley said she had seen the progressive improvements of aqualogan Springwood over the years, both as a resident and a councilor, concluding "aqualogan Springwood has really transformed over the years which can be clearly seen by the number of people who patronise the pool.

"The improvements since council took over the facility have been astounding and the feedback from the community is very positive, I hear a lot of compliments about the facility.

"It is very exciting to receive this recognition and I believe that this feather in the cap will be another incentive for aqualogan Springwood to be used during large swim meets and possibly as the swimming facility for the Commonwealth Games, should the Gold Coast be successful in their bid.

"I feel that the pool and the surrounding facilities are a real showcase for Logan and is a real asset to the city."
