Analysis predicts growth for global swimwear market

New research on the global swimwear market suggests that it will grow at a rate of almost 6% during the period from 2016 to 2020 period with a global value of US$20 billion by the end of the decade.

The independent study from Reportlinker.com, Global Swimwear Market 2016-2020, sees participation in aquatic and swimming activities growing across the globe, identifying developed countries such as the US, Germany, the UK, Japan, and Australia as having relatively well-penetrated swimwear markets, where product innovations continue to be a key driver.

The large number of swimming pools and waterparks in ‘developed’ nations adds to the wide scale adoption of swimwear, with ‘water sports participation’ in the USA rising from 12.5% in 2012 to almost 14% in 2015.

While traditionally western countries have been dominant markets, the report also sees relative growth in the adoption of swimwear in Asian nations, backed by macroeconomic fundamentals, coupled with an increasing preference for swimming as a recreational activity, propelling the growth of the global swimwear market.

It also charts the adoption of swimwear since the 1900s, identifying styles and trends following a circular pattern when it comes to apparel, suggesting “the swimwear market adopts the latest styles and trends, such as silhouettes and cuts, which are similar to yesteryears and modern at the same time.

“Innovations in swimwear material has been an ongoing trend. These include new types of fabrics and materials with a variety of styles and prints.

“Fine detailing, bold prints, pastels, and metallic colours are making quite an impression in the global swimwear market.”

It shows six key global vendors: American Apparel, Arena Italia, Perry Ellis International, Speedo International and Wacoal with Acacia, B. Swim, Billabong, Body Glove, Equatorsun, La Perla, NoZone_Clothing, O'NEILL, Parah, PVH, Quiksilver, Rue Royale Diana (Diana Sport), Seafolly, easpray, Swimwear Anywhere, The Wet Seal, Triangl, TYR Sport, VF and Volcom marked as ‘prominent vendors'.
