AIS to host Sport Information World Congress

The National Sport Information Centre (NSIC), a program of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), will be hosting the 13th International Association for Sports Information (IASI), World Congress at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra from 11th to 13th March, 2009.
The 13th World Congress will mark IASIâs 50th anniversary and will be the first time the event has been hosted in the southern hemisphere.
The Congress will bring together over 200 representatives from various international high performance sport centres, peak sport bodies, academic institutions and government agencies around the world. The purpose of the Congress is to foster continuing international co-operation and collaboration toward the development of sport information, and to promote discussion about key strategic issues between sport information professional from various technical disciplines.
The main theme of the 13th IASI World Congress is; Building and Sustaining Sport Information Communities â Through Connectivity, Collaboration and Sharing. Delegates will identify and examine issues and challenges concerning the application of sport information and its related technologies across a range of disciplines from sport broadcast and performance analysis to online information resource sharing.
The Congress will also discuss the egalitarian philosophies and aspects behind the Web 2.0 movement, and how the use of low cost web technologies can create the potential for connectivity and information resource sharing between both developed and developing global sport communities.
A distinguished keynote panel, lead by Edward Derse, Vice President and General Manager of the US based online gaming software company, GameFly Inc., will speak about the emergence of internet and wireless applications in sport. Derse will discuss whether these technologies are set to overtake traditional media and provide policy makers with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a more egalitarian communication system in sport.
John Bales, President of the International Council for Coach Education, will discuss why coaches are increasingly turning to web based technologies to aggregate and personalise knowledge.
Dr. Veerle De Bosscher, co-author of the publication title, The Global Sport Arms Race, will present nine key common factors that contribute to determining international sporting success.
Dr. Keith Lyons, AIS High Performance Consultant, will discuss the emergence of a Fourth Age, and an era of âconnectivismâ in sport.
Hans Jürgen Meyer, Chief Executive of the German based publishing house, Meyer & Meyer Sport, will discuss the challenges and trends involved in electronic and traditional sport publishing
Josep Escoda, Director of Sport Science and Medicine at Spain's Olympic Training Centre, Centre d'Alt Rendiment, will share his experiences as a member of the IOC Medical Commission responsible for the technical broadcast of sport science and biomechanics at the Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.
While attending the Congress, participants will be able to obtain an insight into the activities of the National Sport Information Centre, regarded as one of the worldâs leading sport information centres.
