AFL's Port Adelaide to get $15 million in Federal funding for planned Alberton Oval redevelopment
The Port Adelaide Football Club has received a $15 million funding commitment from the Federal Government for the redevelopment of its Alberton Oval base.
With the Federal funding matching that already committed by the South Australian Government, the AFL and the Club, the $30 million project is now fully funded
With the Power's plan to redevelop the precinct in north west Adelaide approved by the City of Port Adelaide Enfield earlier this month, phases one and two of project are already underway, with the redevelopment of the Port Adelaide social club and the renovation of the Fos Williams Family Stand for the club’s new AFLW team, with both projects expected to be completed by March next year.
The upgrade will allow the historic home ground of Port Adelaide to host home games for the club’s new AFLW team, which will enter the competition for the 2023 season.
The redevelopment will include a new high-performance centre for the Port Adelaide Football Club featuring a large indoor training facility, two outdoor soccer pitches and training field, AFLW standard changerooms, expansion of the high performance gym and administration offices, and upgraded medical and rehabilitation facilities.
The two basketball courts within the high-performance centre and the outdoor football pitch will be available for community sporting clubs.
The work already underway on the social club includes an interactive museum, expanded retail and an expanded bistro and bar overlooking the oval.
Welcoming the funding, Port Adelaide Chief Executive, Matthew Richardson stated "this is an historic day for the Port Adelaide Football Club and our community.
"Alberton Oval has been the home of the Port Adelaide Football Club since 1880 and our connection to the community is something we are extremely proud of.
"This investment and the transformation of the Alberton Oval precinct ensures our home and the home of our people will be entrenched at Alberton and in the Port Adelaide community, whilst we continue to grow and evolve as a club, as we have done for 151 years.
“Alberton Oval will become a world-class training facility for our female and male athletes, be a social meeting place that our Members and supporters will be proud to call home, deliver invaluable opportunities for local community clubs and provide more green space for passive recreational use.”
Port Adelaide Chairman David Koch said the redevelopment was crucial for its plans to enter the 2023 AFLW season, adding “our existing facilities really do need an upgrade to keep up with the rest of the League.”
The last upgrade of Alberton Oval, which has been Port Adelaide's home ground since 1880 was in 2008/09, when the club spent around $5 million extending its indoor training facilities.
City rivals the Adelaide Crows have also previously secured $15 million in Federal funding for their future headquarters.
