33 killed in fire at indoor amusement park in Indian city of Rajkot

33 people including at least six children have died as a result of a fire at an indoor amusement park in the Indian city of Rajkot.

A massive fire, believed to have resulted from welding being undertaken on site, engulfed the TRP Game Zone on the western outskirts of the city in India's Gujarat state on Saturday evening.

It took nearly an hour for firefighters to douse the blaze, as a dozen ambulances carried injured people to hospital.

Reportedly built four years ago, the amusement arcade was built in a temporary tin roofed structure over two floors.

More than 300 people were inside the venue when the blaze broke out.

Footage showed firefighters clearing debris around collapsed tin roof structures that media reports said were used for indoor bowling, arcade games and trampoline attractions.

Prabhav Joshi, the District Collector of Rajkot, said: “People got trapped as a temporary structure at the facility collapsed near the entrance, making it difficult for the people to come out.”

Police Commissioner Raju Bhargava said a case of negligence would be filed against the amusement park’s owner, Yuvraj Singh Solanki.

Commissioner Bhargava stated "we will be registering an offence for negligence and the deaths which have occurred. Further investigation will take place once we complete the rescue operation."

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, wrote on social media that he was “extremely distressed by the fire. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. Prayers for the injured.”
