$17 million Glenelg cinema plans revealed
Details of plans to build an eight-screen cinema in the Adelaide beachside suburb of Glenelg have been revealed by the Holdfast Bay Council.
The contentious $17 million plan would see developer Andrew Taplin build the 1054-seat cinema above a Council-owned carpark, with the Council providing $2.5 million towards the cost while retaining ownership of the car park.
Details of the council's draft agreement with Taplin were made public at a recent workshop, attended by more than 50 people.
Concerns raised at the meeting included a lack of car parking the area, how extra traffic on local streets would be managed, and the potential overshadowing risk for nearby houses.
Elected members were told by Council staff the project would create an extra 143 carparks, taking the total number to 378, however, both carparks would be closed during the 18-month construction period.
